KATHRYN C. MAYER

Kathryn C. Mayer Ms. Mayer has a proven 20-year track record of coaching business professionals, guiding companies through transformative change, and designing learning systems to transition professionals into new roles, improve team dynamics, strengthen core competencies, and change behavior. She is a recognized leadership coach with expertise in leadership and management development, communication and interviewing skill building, performance management, political savvy, consultative sales, team building, train-the-trainers, women and diversity issues.

She began her business career in the highly demanding and competitive investment banking world with Goldman Sachs, where during a period of high growth she designed creative management development solutions to accelerate learning and advancement of investment professionals both domestically and overseas. Then at Deloitte and Touche Consulting she directed the start-up of a consultative learning organization serving over 3500 clients in the Tri-State area. At Deloitte, she identified inventive cost-effective ways to leverage technology and to increase the promotion rate of women and minorities, creating and implementing a comprehensive technical and consultative curriculum. Later, at Salomon Smith Barney, she took on responsibility for improving the firm's competitiveness with other top investment banks through the creation of a learning organization to develop high performance leaders. The most significant gains were seen in the most challenging areas: improving the management behavior of Managing Directors and increasing the fairness and usefulness of the performance review process.

Kathryn has honed a unique approach to leadership and developed a proprietary strategic leadership model called Collaborative Competition. Her model is founded on the principle that competition is first and foremost an opportunity to learn, evolve and excel—and it can be an enjoyable experience. Collaborative Competition takes a compelling approach to fostering growth and advancement as well as teamwork and company loyalty. Her multidisciplinary background includes management training skills, cognitive psychology, executive coaching, sports coaching and strategy, and theatrical techniques. Her clients include CSFB Investment Banking, UBS Investment Banking, Bank of America, Glaxo Smith Kline, United Entertainment Media, Symbol Technology, Hewitt Consulting, and Price Waterhouse Coopers, among others.

Ms. Mayer is a sought-after speaker for leadership conferences and other events. She is currently writing a book on women and competition titled, Grand Slam Power: How Women Can Learn to Love Competition through Collaborative Competition for which she has interviewed successful and powerful women around the country from all walks of life.

She received a BA in Sociology with Phi Beta Kappa honors from St. Lawrence University and obtained an MS in Counseling Psychology from SUNY at Albany. She has taken courses at Columbia University in the Workplace Learning Institute and the Executive Coaching and Advanced Executive Coaching seminars at NYU.
